Cruising is dangerous business particular for women and children.

The limited statistics available are downright frightening.

If you plan on traveling alone, consider a different type of vacation.  There are many more destinations that are much safer for a female traveling alone both abroad and in the United States.

Your risk of being the victim of a sexual assault is pretty high on a cruise ship and, in all likelihood, should you become a victim the case will not be prosecuted.

If you are still set on taking that cruise, here are some important safety tips that you can and should easily undertake when traveling on a cruise

6 important cruise safety tips for women

Purchase an inexpensive security system

With so many people having a room key to your cabin, or being able to easily get one, at least you will hear an audible alarm if you are sleeping or in the shower. Further, the wireless item that you stick to the door may also serve as a visible deterrent to the rapists and sexual deviants that many of the cruise ships employ.

The good thing about the wireless alarms are that they are portable and if you purchase a set that has one you can replace it since in all likelihood an employee will remove it when they enter your cabin and you are not there.  It might be a good idea to buy enough of them that you have plenty of extras on hand.

An alarm door stopper is also highly recommended.

As an added safety tip, I would strongly recommend  carrying the door stopper with you and using it whenever you are alone in your cabin.

Be sure to check for functionality first in case the cruise employees have disabled it.

Book your cabin on one of the higher levels

Having your cabin on one of the lower decks places you at a disadvantage since you in closer proximity to where the cruise ship staff reside and they can observe your comings and goings plus you have to walk much further to get anywhere. It is not only cruise ship employees that perpetuated sexual abuse of cruise ship, however it sure seems that are large percentage are created by employees so why chance it

Do not let any of the cruise ship employees into your cabin.

Seems extreme however many of the assaults are perpetuated by cruise ship employees. They are not your friends. Remember that. Do not let them into your cabin under any circumstances when you in the cabin. Not to bring you towels and not to tell you about an excursion.

Your room can be freshened up when you are out.

Do not go into anyone’s cabin

I am still amazed at how many women fall for this trap.  The cute entertainer, who is a cruise ship employee, just wants to be alone with you for a few minutes or the sexy deckhand just happens to make homemade necklaces and has one that he knows you will love.  Don’t fall for it.

Be extra wary if you are invited to a “party” or small gathering by cruise ship employees as well.

Do not go into anyone’s cabin!

Stick with the general population on cruise ship excursions

A cruise ship employee might tell you about a great out of the way place that he can take you to or he may even recommend a shop or other area that “most people do not know about”.  Again, don’t fall for it. This is likely a ruse to separate you from the group sothe cruise ship employee or his friends can get you alone where you are most vulnerable.

Be very aware of your surroundings

Try not to walk down darkened hallways and  don’t accept drinks from strangers.  Did you know that GHB the date rape drug, can even be injected into water bottles?

You may think you are safe if you are watching the bartender pour your drink but remember, he’s a cruise ship employee. If you get up to dance with anyone and leave your drink, order a new one.  Still not fool proof but an unattended drink can be an open invitation for someone to slip something in your drink.

If you are traveling with your children, keep your eyes on them all the times.  Be very wary about leaving them in the care of a cruise ship employee even for organized kids outings. And, if they are so small that they can’t really talk or communicate, don’t bring them unless you are with them 100% of the time.

Have a frank talk with teenagers and be very sure to actively and proactively monitor their activities. Keep watch on anyone, particularly cruise ship employees that seem to have taken an “interest” in them

Cruise ship crimes can be perpetuated by anyone, not just a cruise ship employee however many of the rapes and assaults do appear to be tied to employees because quite frankly, most of the crimes are simply not prosecuted.

Women  traveling alone or with children should think twice before embarking on a cruise. Following the 6 important cruise safety tips for women can help reduce your chances of becoming an victim.
