Stevens used to work with Jackie Brucia who was her boss at Atlantic Automotive Group (AAG), which operates several new-car dealerships. Stevens then moved out of the state and left her job. She returned to New York for a visit and met with Brucia who said that she needed a Kidney transplant and Stevens volunteered but was told that Brucia already had a donor.
According to papers filed by Debbie Stevens with the state’s Human Rights commission, Brucia did say ‘You never know, I may have to take you up on that offer one day”
Stevens then relocated back to New York and returned to work at AAG. Shortly thereafter, Brucia called her in to her office to ask if she was serious about donating the kidney and she said she was. Her kidney was donated but since she wasn’t an exact match her kidney was donated to someone else which enabled Brucia to move up on the donors list.
While her boss recovered at home. Stevens also felt unwell and went home sick there days after her return and claims that Brucia called her from home to berate her and she was fired shortly thereafter.
