Las Vegas serial killer Nathan Burkett has been in custody after being arrested for the murder of 2 Las Vegas women, one in 1978 and the other in 1994 however police believe that Nathan Burkett is a serial killer and that are likely more victims.
Burkett’s first court appearance was initially postponed until 8-16.
When he did appear in court, on the 16th, his lawyers brought forth a motion to prohibit media in the courtroom.
The judge in the case denied the motion on Friday.
Las Vegas Metro Police had a YouTube video that summarized Burkett’s arrest on YouTube. The video has since been removed after complaints from Burkett’s lawyer, Alzora Jackson to the judge .
In the YouTube video, Burkett is described by police as an animal.
Jackson told Fox 5 on Thursday,
I have to have the ability at some point to give Mr. Burkett a fair trial. If this continues, where are we going to get a fair and impartial jury?
The grandfatherly looking 62 year old Burkett has a large rap sheet including prior convictions for murder and manslaughter. Some of his old neighbors have described have described him in a favorable light and were horrified to learn that they lived near a possible serial killer.
Some neighbors recounted how strong the man they knew was Criptoe” was and how they had even seen him carrying a shovel on his back. At the time, they did not think it was too unusual.
The fact is this man has murdered before. Numerous times.
In addition to the deaths of Barbara Cox and Tina Gayle Mitchell that Burkett has recently been charged with, he served time in prison in Mississippi for killing his own mother. She was found burned to death.
In Las Vegas, in addition to the 2 murders he has been charged with, he was in prison for 6 years for killing another women, Valetter Jean Bousley and has been questioned in another case.
Are there more victims of Burkett that we are not aware of? It seems a likely possibility.
Burkett is being held without bail and a preliminary hearing as been scheduled for October 5th.
