A Las Vegas teenager leaves infant in trash bin but has not yet been arrested.
The baby, a girl, who did not survive, was found Wednesday at an apartment complex on Rancho Drive. A maintenance worker found the body.
The unidentified teen allegedly kept her pregnancy a secret from both family and friends and apparently gave birth at her home. Then she she hid the baby’s body in her home for approximately a month before moving the dead infant to the trash bin.
It is not known if the baby was born alive or not.
Even though all of the circumstances are not yet known, there are some who feel sorry for her and actually have empathy for the circumstances that would cause the Las Vegas teenager to leave her infant in trash bin.
Others feel that the mother must come to grips with what happened and tell the truth. Some wonder how a teenager who lives at home with their parents (or adult caretakers) could actually hide a pregnancy.
In the early 2000’s, there was a number of high profile cases involving infants being dumped just like trash. These cases likely helped in the implementation of Nevada’s Safe Haven law.
In Nevada, the Safe Haven Infant Protection Act allows an individual to surrender an infant with no fear of arrest or prosecution. No names or records are required. The parents can bring a baby less than 30 days old to any hospital, and urgent care facility, an occupied fire or police station or they can call 911 to have an ambulance dispatched to the location. The appropriate government child protection agency will immediately take the newborn into custody and place the infant in a foster or pre-adoptive home
Perhaps Nevada needs to be tougher on these young mothers who think nothing of either killing their newborn baby or dumping the body of a stillborn.
A tragic case depicting the total disregard of human life that some teenagers appear to have is the Carmela Camero case. Carmelo, at age 16 , was on vacation with her family from Reno when she gave birth. She callously dumped the baby’s body in the trash bin at the Mirage Hotel and Casino. She was tracked down and no charges were brought against her because it was determined that the baby was stillborn.
Three years later, Carmelo had another baby. This time the baby survived until she was suffocated at the hands of her own mother.
Let’s hope the unidentified teen who left her dead infant int he dumpster is held accountable for her actions.
A makeshift memorial has been set-up at the apartment complex where flowers, candles and crosses have been left to pay tribute to the dead infant.
