MESQUITE, Nev. — Mesquite Mom Star Flores, also known as Shawnanna Starr Guerrero Flores, has been sentenced to just one year of jail time for defrauding people out of money after she claimed her son has cancer.
Flores’ 7-year-old son Rodrigo did not have cancer but she told him that he did and had him record a video pleading with others to donate money. She supposedly even convinced her own family that her son was ill.
Flores was arrested Sept. 6 and initially charged with over 90 counts related to the fraud including charges of obtaining money, property, rent or labor by false pretenses, petit larceny, contributory neglect of a child, obstructing a public officer, and unlawful acts involving electronic mail or transmission.
Family, friends and others that helped the family were horrified to learn that the Mesquite Mom was scamming them.
Somehow Shawnanna Starr Guerrero Flores was able to obtain a very light sentence and will spend only 12 months or less behind bars.
The most likely reason for the slap-on-the-wrist sentence for Flores was because the amount of money she scammed that authorities were able to identify was under $500.
Authorities initially wanted to charge her with felony fraud but were unable to pursue those charges and she ended up being charged with misdemeanors.
Flores was also ordered to serve 500 hours of community service with a cancer-related organization and she has to pay back the money she had collected under false pretenses
The small Nevada town is a city known for having large percentage of drug abusers that call Mesquite, Nev. home with methamphetamine being the drug of choice. It is not known if Flores is a drug abuser.
