OMG -6 foot bar pulled from Brazilian man’s skull and he’s OK?
The AP first reported the plight of Edward Leite.
The 24 year old construction worker was wearing a hard hat when the metal bar fell from from the fifth floor of a building under construction.
The bar entered in through the back of his skull and went straight through poking out from between his eyes. One can only imagine the force that was generated to piece thorough the hard hat and Leite’s skull.
ABC news reports that Leite’s wife Lilian Regina da Silva Costa told the AP,
They told me he was laying down (in the ambulance) with the bar pointing upward. He was holding it and his face was covered in blood. His look was as if nothing had happened. When he arrived he told the doctors he wasn’t feeling anything, no pain, nothing. It’s unbelievable.
Leite underwent a 6 hour surgical procedure to remove the pole at Rio de Janeiro’s Miguel Couto Hospital.
Ruy Monteiro, the hospital’s head of neurosurgery told the Globo TV network that Leite escaped by just a few centimeters from losing one eye and becoming paralyzed on the left side of his body.
Although he is reportedly doing well, Leite is expected to remain hospitalized for at least two weeks.
He said the bar entered a “non-eloquent” area of the brain , an area that doesn’t have a specific, major known function.
Luiz Alexandre Essinger, the hospital’s chief of staff, told the AP
He was taken to the operating room, his skull was opened, they examined the brain and the surgeon decided to pull the metal bar out from the front in the same direction it entered the brain. Today, he continues well, with few complaints for a five-hour-long surgery. … He says he feels little pain.
