The Colorado shooting suspect makes first court appearance

Colorado shooting suspect makes first court appearance and the hearing lasted only 11 minutes.  James Holmes is accused of planning and executing one of the worst mass murders in recent history. 12 people were killed, including a 6 year old child, and 58 people were injured.

James Holmes was transported to court under heavy security.  The Colorado shooting suspect makes first court appearance and had both his hands and feet shackled before he was led to the courtroom through an underground tunnel.

Holmes was wide-eyed seated next to his Public Defender, Tamara Brady.

According to ABC news, the Colorado shooting suspect appeared somewhat dazed, open and closed his eyes often and failed to make eye contact with victims and victims advocates who were seated in a gallery. One of his public defenders had to nudge him so that he would stand up when the judge entered the courtroom

He was advised of Miranda rights by a judge and also told that there was probable cause to hold him, without bond, for first degree murder. He did not speak.

His next appearance is scheduled for July 30th. At that time, formal charges are expected to be filed.

Will the Colorado shooting suspect, James Holmes, face the death penalty? The State of Colorado does have the death penalty however no decision has been made. District Attorney Carol Chambers said a death penalty decision could take weeks or months.

Many feel that the Colorado shooting suspect should receive the death sentence for his heinous actions at The Century 16 Movie Theaters at the Aurora Town Center in Aurora, Colo.

Even former Denver prosecutor Craig Silverman agrees.  He said, “If James Holmes isn’t executed, Colorado may as well throw away its death penalty law”

Colorado shooting suspect makes first court appearance and behaves oddly

His eyes varied between being open and then closing and his hair just looked bizarre.  Shades of red, orange and almost a yellow color  weirdly blended with what looks like his natural darker color. His odd behavior could be due to medication or as some suggest, he may be trying to fake it.  We do not know at this point. A times, he looked like he had a hard time trying to stay awake.

Some family members were present at the hearing and other than their initial statement expressing their sympathy to the victims and asking for privacy, they have remained silent.

His mother when first contacted about the shootings at her home in California said, “You have the right person”.  She then added,  “I need to call the police… I need to fly out to Colorado”.

It is unknown if the family will speak out in detail about the Colorado shooting suspects childhood and if they noticed any signs of severe problems, however based on his mother’s statement above, it appears the family knew he was “not right” which is in stark contrast to others who described him as nice and appearing normal.

It is still known what triggered the deadly mass attack at the movie theater.
