The Drew Peterson trial day 2 got underway after a brief delay. Peterson is allowed to wear his own clothes to court during the trial which isn’t all that uncommon. The court allowed it so that he is not viewed in a prejudicial manner by jurors.
Apparently his pants didn’t fit too well so the proceedings were delayed until Peterson could be outfitted in proper fitting attire. Once all was said and done, Peterson emerged in a blue blazer and dress pants. Peterson also does not have to wear the hand cuffs and leg chains during his trial – unless of course he has some type of outburst.
The potential jurors had already been chosen before Drew Peterson’s trial was delayed two years ago. So it was simply a matter of whittling down the potential jurors.
They had been told to avoid media coverage of the case which, given all the coverage the case has had, prompted several jurors to inform the court yesterday that they found it hard to hard to avoid media reports.
In the end, both sides were able to agree on the jurors and msnbc reports that a letter carrier and a poet were among those selected as jurors. A total of 12 jurors and 4 alternates were selected. They are comprised of seven men and five are women. Nine are white, two are African-Americans and one is Hispanic.
Yesterday Drew Peterson’s attorney Joel Brodsky told ABC News, that he expects the case against his client to be thrown out,
We have always said, and this has never changed: They simply don’t have any evidence. They have conjecture, rumor, speculation, hearsay, but they don’t have any evidence. Even a predispositioned jury is going to want to hear evidence, and they don’t have any.
Today Brodsky was eager to for the trial to start so he could deliver his opening arguments. He said,
You will hear the story of Drew Peterson from beginning to end. We will show that the state’s theory is implausible at best.
Peterson is on trial for the murder of his third wife, Kathleen Savio. He was divorced from Savio and married to wife #4 Stacy Peterson. Savio was found dead in her bathtub and, although there was no water found in the bathtub, her death was ruled as an accidental drowning.
Stacy Peterson then disappeared and many were pointing the finger at Peterson. Her Pastor came forward with hearsay information alleging that Stacy told him that her husband told her he killed Savio and made it look like an accident and that she was afraid of her husband.
Savio’s body was exhumed and Peterson was arrested. Stacy Peterson has not been found and is presumed dead. Although Peterson has not been arrested in that case, he has long been suspected by many of being involved in her disappearance. Peterson claims that ran off with another man.
Opening arguments are scheduled to begin Tuesday, July 31st.
