Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev, who has used his background as a small town boy from the city of Searchlight, Nev., when it is to his benefit in an attempt to identify with people from his home state, has once again put his foot in his mouth and angered people across bipartisan lines in the state.
Las Vegas News | Las Vegas World News
This time Reid, in an interview with the Reno Gazette Journal, said that legalized prostitution in Nevada may be the very reason that the Silver State does not land the RNC in 2016.
The, “foot in the mouth,” comment was very likely politically charged and said, in an attempt to actually discourage the RNC from choosing Nevada. Although the electoral votes went for Obama in the 2012 election, there are very influential, powerful republicans in the state with extremely deep pockets such as multi-million dollar contributor Sheldon Adelson.
Representatives from Sheri’s Ranch Brothel, a LEGAL brothel located about an hours drive from Las Vegas, have spoken out against Reid’s comments and said,
These serious prostitution-related issues didn’t seem to bother Republicans when they considered Tampa, so why would they have an issue with a state that enforces legal prostitution? After all, Nevada’s licensed brothels only allow safe sex between mature consenting adults in a secure, STD-free environment. Sex trafficking and child prostitution are abhorred by representatives of the legal Nevada sex work community.
They also said,
We all know in that politicians & public figures enjoy the company of prostitutes as much as any other American citizen, if not more so. So why not host political events in locations close to legalized brothels, where public servants can blow off steam in a worry-free environment?
Prostitution is legal in Nevada and has been for a very long time. It is as acceptable as gambling, which is also legal although frowned upon by some, and should not listed as potential reason for the RNC not to choose Nevada.
Here is out message to Senator Reed,
Senator Reid,
We suggest that you peruse the websites craigslist and backdoor.com for nearly any state and take a good look at the adult-oriented section and view the illegal prostitution trade that takes place.
To sway a large, revenue generating event away from a state that legally regulates prostitution in favor of other states like Tampa, for example, that runs a highly lucrative, illegal sex trade is simple unconscionable.
Senator Reid, you should be ashamed of yourself and you owe the state of Nevada and all of it’s hardworking residents a heartfelt apology.
