Boxer Hector Camacho, better known as Macho Camacho, was shot in the face Tuesday night in his hometown of Bayamon in Puerto Rico.
Camacho, 50, was sitting in a Ford Mustang parked outside a bar with a friend, Adrian Mojica Moreno, 49, when a car allegedly pulled up and opened fire. Moreno died and Camacho was seriously injured.
Fox Sports reports that Police spokesman Alex Diaz said officers found nine small bags of cocaine in Moreno’s pocket, and a 10th bag open inside the car.
So far no arrests have been and police have not released any motives for the shooting.
Initially, it was thought that Camacho had a good chance of surviving his injuries, however, his condition has taken a turn for the worse.
His family is now making the very difficult decision as to whether or not to remove Hector Camacho from life support.
Maria Matias, the boxer’s mother, flew in from New York to be at her son’s side. She is reportedly devastated and knows that the prognosis is not good.
Those that know the boxer say he has nine lives and are rooting for him; saying that if anyone can beat the odds, it is Macho Camacho.
Doctors had initially said the bullet passed through his jaw and lodged in his shoulder.
Dr. Ernesto Torres, the Director of the Centro Medico trauma center in San Juan. said in an updated statement that the bullet damaged three of the four main arteries in his neck and fractured two vertebrae, which could leave him paralyzed if he does pull through and survive.
He also said the boxer is in the “fight for his life”
