LAS VEGAS — Two Las Vegas foster parents arrested for child abuse now face a multitude of charges for beating and starving three children.
Dwight Solander, 50 and his wife Janet Solander, 53, were arrested on March 20, after a months long police investigation. Danielle Hinton, 21, the biological daughter of Janet Solander, was also arrested.
The Solander’s initially fostered the three children and later adopted them.
According to the Las Vegas Review Journal, police reports state that CPS made a visit to the home in September 2013 and found an orange bucket that was outfitted with a toilet seat on top and a board on the floor. Danielle Hinton told police that the girls were forced to sit on the bucket for hours as punishment and forced to sleep on the board with out blankets or sheets.
For reasons that has not yet been explained by CPS, the children were not removed from the home. They returned to the home six months latter, in February 2014, and were told that the adopted children, all girls, were in Nebraska. In actuality the girls were sent to a private boarding school in Florida.
CPS which has been under fire not only in Las Vegas, but in many other states, issued a statement on the Solander case, although they did not address why no action was taken when the living conditions were first discovered and photographed so many months earlier.
The girl were located by Florida caseworkers and said that they were fearful of returning home. They told the caseworkers that they were beaten and that that Janet Solander controlled when they could go to the bathroom by using a timer. If they soiled themselves before the timer went off, the soiled undergarments were placed in their mouth. The children said they had cold water dumped on them, were not allowed to use towels to dry off after a shower and had catheters inserted.
Janet Solander wrote a book, Foster Care: How to Fix This Corrupted System, that is being slammed with one star reviews in light of her recent arrest.
In addition to the three girls, the Solander’s also had four foster children in the home. All have been placed in the custody of CPS.
Dwight Solander was charged with three counts of child abuse with substantial bodily harm and 12 counts of child abuse or neglect.
Janet Solander was charged with four counts of child abuse with substantial bodily harm, sexual abuse and 12 counts of child abuse or neglect.
Hinton was booked on three counts of child abuse with substantial bodily harm.
A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for April 8.
