Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman delivers her first State of the City Address held in the City Council Chambers in the new Las Vegas City Hall
Mayor Goodman shares her penchant and ongoing commitment supporting the continued revitalization of downtown Las Vegas that her husband and predecessor former Mayor Oscar Goodman did by highlighting the new City Hall, Mob Museum and the Smith Center for the Performing Arts. She also mentioned a number of casino expansions downtown as well as Zappos.com entry to downtown Las Vegas. Tony Shay the CEO of Zappos.com was in attendance
Mayor Goodman calls this “the year of downtown. She said the city is working to build a new arena and land a professional basketball team.
“Life is short and we want a basketball team now.”
“I will say nothing more on this until the money’s in the bank and the shovel’s in the ground, but rest assured, I want an NBA team in our city as much as my husband did,”
“The excitement is something that is contagious to all.”
Mayor Goodman addressed the continued high unemployment rates.
“We have to keep addressing every one of the things that has happened downtown has been about jobs — putting people to work,”
“Every time a hotel is remodeled, every small business that opens, everything that is going on is bringing jobs to our city.”
“And so I’m proud to announce the city is going to invest another $519 million in 19 additional infrastructure projects in 2012 through 2013.”
Toward the end of her speech, Mayor Goodman took a playful jab at her husband, former Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman
“As we are finally winding down, I’m so glad you’re alive,”
“And I didn’t have to do this with showgirls and Bombay Sapphire being passed out to all of you.”
