In what is a great case of family dedication, a Miami woman dies after spending 42 years in a coma.
Edwarda O’Bara was a 16 year old girl back in 1970 who was, according to the family’s website, mildly diabetic and in 1970, she became ill, vomited was hospitalized.
As she falling in and out of consciousness, she made her mother promise not to leave her and then fell into a long-lasting diabetic coma.
Her devoted mother, Kay O’Bara, kept her promise and took care of her daughter until Kay died in March, 2008
It’s no easy task caring for someone in a coma. Kay O’Bara did not sleep for more than 90 minutes at a time and cared for her daughter, Edwarda, for 38 years.
She took great care of her daughter and ensured that she was in comfortable, pleasant surroundings.
Kay O”Bara seems to be a truly remarkable woman. She wrote in to the Miami Herald in 1976, offering advice for someone that has lost her husband and said that her own husband had died after being together for 22 years.
Even facing her own difficult time, she still reached out to others.
When Kay O’Bara passed away 5 years ago, Edwarda’s sister Colleen took over the care of her beloved sister, until Edwarda O’Bara passed away on November 21.
Colleen O’Bara said,
. . while taking care of Edwarda I noticed her looking directly at me and gave me the biggest smile I had ever seen. She then closed her eyes and joined my Mom in Heaven.
