The Steubenville Ohio rape has attracted national attention thanks to the support of Anonymous, comedian and activist Roseanne Barr and Nancy Grace.
The case has attracted nearly as much national attention as the recent India Rape cases that have come to light.
A girl was raped last August by two members of the football team at Steubenville High school. Videos surfaced of what may be or may not be, the girl, passed out, being carried by her arms and legs.
It seems that the case was being kept under wraps like a dirty small town secret, until Twitter accounts and cell-phone photos, publicized by the hacker group Anonymous, surfaced and brought widespread attention to the Steubenville rape case.
Details are still surfacing and here is what is known so far.
There was a number of parties on the night of August 11, 2011. Although many of the attendees at the various parties were underage, booze, and possibly drugs were widely available.
One of the parties, likely the initial one, was held at the home of an Volunteer Football Coach and, it appears, this is where the victim was first attacked.
Trent Mays and Ma’lik Richmond, two 16-year-old sophomore Big Red High School football players at Steubenville High School dragged a very drunk 16-year-old girl around from house to house sexually assaulting her and taking pictures along the way.
May’s bragged on twitter about the party tweeting,
Huge party!!! Banger!!!!
Her drink may have been spiked with Rohyphenol, better known as “roofies” which left her incapacitated.
There are unconfirmed rumors that her ex-boyfriend and a current or former girl friend of hers set her up.
She was reportedly placed in the trunk of a car and taken from party to party.
While the victim was being dragged around, some pretty vile things were done to her.
We may never find out the full extent in which she was violated.
Some are saying she was raped digitally or with other items and simply don’t believe that the two 16-year-olds are the only ones who raped the unconscious victim as she was dragged from party to party.
Many believe that there were more people involved and that they should be found and held accountable.
The group Anonymous released a video that was more than 12 minutes long. The video shows Michael Nodianos joking about the victim after the attack.
Nodianos, a 2012 graduate of Steubenville High School and an Ohio State University academic-scholarship student, was caught on tape making extremely offensive comments about the case. He has hired an attorney and has tried to distance himself, although he was at one of the parties where the victim was assaulted.
On the video, he said,
Why isn’t she waking up? She’s dead.
They peed on her. That’s how you know she’s dead, because someone pissed on her.
She is so raped right now.
He claims to have received death threats and has since dropped out of Ohio State University, although he has not yet been charged in the Steubenville rape case.
After being outed on the video, Nodianos now says that he is ashamed and embarrassed about his comments.
Roseanne Barr became involved because she was appalled at the case and knew she could assist in helping the case gain increased attention in the media.
On the Nancy Grace show, Roseann Barr appeared, via Skype, to discuss the case. She said that the prosecutor’s own son might be involved in the Steubenville rape leading to more speculation about the small town trying to cover-up the rape.
Trent Mays and Ma’lik Richmond were arrested and are scheduled to stand trial in juvenile court on Feb. 13.
