Travis Doering the Las Vegas resident who was killed Tuesday evening in a police standoff underwent a radical personality change in the weeks before he was killed.
Doering, 40, who lived with two roommates in a residence in Southwest Las Vegas, was killed by a member of the SWAT team after he pointed a rifle at a police officer who had responded to the call that was made by one of Doering’s roommates.
During the standoff Doering was seen walking in and out of the house with the rifle.
Before the SWAT intervention, a specially trained police officer talked with Doering on the telephone for nearly an hour but was unable to get the disturbed and suicidal man to surrender.
The Minnesota native had been employed as a sound technician in Las Vegas. His friends and family spoke highly of him and did not seem to be aware of any problems.
But there were problems.
According to MyNews3, one of the roommates of Travis Doering said that his roommate’s behavior changed dramatically over the past few weeks. According to the roommate, Doering was using speed, not sleeping and hallucinating.
Streets drugs, particularly methamphetamine, can cause what is know as a “drug-induced psychosis”
It is unknown is Doering was using drugs for a long time, however his hallucinations and lack of sleep are a telltale symptom of a drug induced psychosis. Symptoms typically last up to a few days and are usually the result of prolonged or heavy street-drug use.
Those suffering through a drug-induced psychosis respond well to treatment. Sadly, because of Doering’s threatening actions Tuesday night he wasn’t able to be talked down. If he was able to be convinced to surrender peacefully, he could have obtained treatment.
Another cause of a drug-induced type of psychosis is when a a person has an underlying, undiagnosed problem that is triggered by drug use.
In our previous article we had speculated that perhaps Travis Doering suffered through a job loss or financial difficulties that left him in a vulnerable position which caused mental health problems.
Doering will be buried in Minnesota.
