With Thanksgiving just around the corner, it’s just sad to hear about numerous Butterball turkey farms accused of turkey abuse.
While many people are buying turkeys to feed their families and celebrate, most people probably do not think about how the turkeys were treated before being served up for the family celebration.
If you do think about it, you likely assume that there are controls in place to ensure that the turkeys are treated well before being slaughtered.
That does not appear to be the case at the Butterball turkey farms in North Carolina.
There are five Butterball turkey farms accused of turkey abuse located in Lenoir, Duplin, Onslow and Sampson Counties.
The abuse shown on recently released video from the Mercy for Animal group is heartbreaking.
As you can see in the above video, it shows workers callously kicking turkeys, stomping them, slamming them very hard to the ground and dragging them by their wings and neck.
The video was made last month and Mercy for Animals said that the turkeys also suffered from open sores, infections and broken bones.
Last year, the group made another hidden videotape at another North Carolina Butterball turkey farm. That farm is located in Shannon, NC and showed similar abuse being inflicted on turkeys.
Even if you are not a vegan or vegetarian, we’d like to assume that most people in this world would expect the animals to be treated humanely.
Butterball has, of course, released the requisite statements saying that they have “zero tolerance” for animal abuse, but the evidence shows that this is a repeated problem at the Butterball facilities.
Clearly something needs to change immediately at the Butterball facilities.
What type of people are they employing? Are they given any psychological testing?
All types of animal abuse will continue until our legal system doles out severe punishment for animal abuse; something that is just not occurring consistently, regardless of state laws passed in many states making animal abuse a felony
