
It is certainly not the homecoming that his family hoped for. He was scheduled to return to Reno, NV to see his 2 children. Instead his body is being flown to Reno, NV on Friday to prepare for his funeral.
Blunk, was a Colorado shooting victim. His life was snuffed out at the hands of the Colorado Shooter, James Holmes along with 11 other victims who died and over 50 people who were injured.
The 26 year old Navy Veteran died a hero, something he frequently talked about, while protecting his 21 year old girlfriend, Jansen Young.
Young told NBC News that when the shooter started his attack, Blunk knew to throw her to the floor. Once on the movie theater floor, Blunk kept pushing her with his arms as she heard shots being fired.
She did notice that Blunk wasn’t moving but did not realize he wad dead.
Young had been dating Jonathan Blunk since October.
Chantel Blunk is the estranged wife of Jonathan Blunk. She lives in Reno, NV with their 2 children, a 4-year-old girl and a 2-year-old boy. She recalled that, “He always talked about if he were going to die, he wanted to die a hero”
Blunk graduated high school in 2004 and enlisted in the Navy. He served three tours in the Persian Gulf and North Arabian Sea. He served aboard the USS Nimitz working as an engineer in San Diego and was a 5 year Navy Veteran.
After he left the Navy, he and his wife separated and he then moved to Colorado in 2009. He had hopes of re-enlisting in the Navy with the goal of becoming a Navy SEAL.
