Halloween safety

Halloween is something that adults and children alike look forward to, however, it’s important to spend some time preparing beforehand in the event of a problem.

Parents  can be lulled into a false sense of safety, believing that there is safety in numbers, and, unfortunately, this is not always the case.

In addition to using common sense, modern technology can help keep track of your loved ones and provide valuable information in the event of an emergency.

2013 Halloween Safety. Use common sense

  1. Know your child’s Halloween route.
  2. Do not allow children, of any age, to go Trick or Treating alone. Parents of younger children should escort their children or ensure that another trusted adult is with the group.
  3. Instruct your children not to approach any home that does not have their outdoor light on. A home with the outdoor light off can mean that the person in the home does not want to be bothered, or it can mean that they are a registered sex offender and are not allowed to interact with children.
  4. Make sure that your children do not eat any candy until you have personally inspected it. Discard any candy that is not wrapped. Check each wrapper to ensure there are no holes in it and look at each unwrapped piece before allowing your child to eat it.  Throw out anything that just does not look right.
  5. Adults should make sure a trusted family memner or friend knows where you are going.

Use technology for a safer Halloween

  1. The FBI has a Child ID application available for iPhones and smartphones using the Android operating system. Child ID  provides a convenient way for parents to electronically store pictures and vital information about their children in case they go missing.
  2. Use a GPS tracking application to monitor your child’s movements. There are applications that you can obtain from your cell phone provider and many private ones such as GPS TRACKER.
  3. Check for sex offender that live in your area so that your child can avoid those area.  You may be very surprised to find out how many sex offenders are living in your area. There are a number of websites will map sex offenders in the area or you can visit your state’s registry of sen offenders for direct access.

Common sense + technology = a safer Hallowseen
