Lucas, a mother of five, had three children with White and two children from a previous marriage. She wanted to move forward with her life and began dating Joseph Averman.
On July 27, 2012, White showed up at Lucas’ home because, according to Averman, she was not answering his calls or texts.
Once inside the home, White asked to speak with Lucas privately so they moved to a bedroom to talk while Averman and the children waited in another part of the home.
Averman heard them arguing and went to check on Lucas. As he got to the bedroom, he saw White pull out a gun and shoot Lucas. He then shot Averman three times.
Averman survived and will likely be a key witness at the trial.
After shooting both Lucas and Averman, White took off in Lucas’ vehicle and drove for six hours, not stopping until he was in Prescott, Ariz.
Troy White then walked into a police station and turned himself in.
In addition to being charged with first degree murder with a deadly weapon, White has been charged with burglary while in possession of a firearm or deadly weapon, attempted murder with a deadly weapon, carrying a concealed weapon and five counts of child abuse or neglect.
In early 2013, both sides said that they were ready for the case to go to trial and a trial date was set for late 2013.
Numerous continuances have since been granted and another court date has been scheduled for March 3, 2014.
Echo Lucas’ mother, Amber Gaines, is raising her grandchildren and maintains a memorial Facebook page, “In remembrance of Echo Lucas“.
