Former Metro “bad cop” sentenced for groping women

John Norman,  the former Las Vegas “bad cop” sentenced for groping women while on duty, will be off the streets for a couple of years

Norman was arrested last year in February. His arrest stemmed from 2 stops he had made in 2011.

The former Las Vegas “bad cop” sentenced for groping women had pulled over 2 females in 2 separate incidents, and directed the women to expose their breasts.  In one of the cases he placed his hand on the woman’s breast.

But that’s not all.  The Clark County Criminal Cops website says that Norman was investigated for 2 other instances of some type of sexual misconduct but there was not enough evidence for him to be charged in those cases.

He was charged with felony oppression under the color of law, gross misdemeanor oppression under the color of law, felony coercion and gross misdemeanor open and gross lewdness.

John Norman resigned from the force in June.

He initially was on paid leave until charges against him were formally filed and remained on unpaid leave until he resigned from the force.

The former former Las Vegas “bad cop” sentenced for groping women will serve two years in jail.

In the past, women in Las Vegas, and in other cities, have been on guard that they might be stopped by a police impersonator.

Las Vegas has a 24/7 lifestyle and women traveling alone, at any time of the day can be at risk.

Fortunately, there are some precautions that you can take to better protect yourself.

If a police officer, or someone that appears to be a police officer, attempts to pull you over, stay calm and do any or all of the following,

• Slow your vehicle down, put on your flashers and continue to drive at a slow pace to a more populated location such as a busy well-lighted store parking lot or even a casino valet area.
• Use your cell phone to contact someone you know and trust, after you are stopped and before you open your window or door.  You don’t want to use your cell phone while driving, since it is against the law. This step should be a given for a female traveling alone any time of day, especially if you do decide to stop after being pulled over in a remote location.  If you do not have a hands free/voice activated device, and make the call while driving, you run  the risk of getting a ticket, however if explained to a judge, it would appear that the explanation provided would be reasonable.
• Call 311. This is the non emergency number. The operator can verify whether the person pulling you over is indeed an officer and send back-up as needed.  Also, this will provide a record of your call and might be a good step to at any time of day if you are pulled over while traveling alone.

Metro, in the past, has said they their officers understand these measures and they appear to be sensitive and reasonable if women traveling alone take such actions to protect themselves.

I can tell you from firsthand experience that I have have used the 311 number and the trained personnel are very helpful.

John Norman, the former Las Vegas “bad cop” sentenced for groping women is of the streets for awhile but there can be others out so you owe it to yourself to protect yourself!
